There are a host of employment opportunities for healthcare professionals with a range of temp and perm contracts currently available. A recent report from the annual Skills for Care workforce stated 8.2%, approximately 100,000, healthcare sector positions are unfulfilled with a particular focus on Nurses and the social care sectors.

The NHS Improvement regulator has released that from April to June 2021 9.2% of posts were not filled, a shortage of 108,000, with 11.8% of nursing posts remaining vacant, leading to a shortage of 42,000.

Free Healthcare

The National Healthcare System or NHS is a free publicly funded healthcare system that all residents of the UK, including Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland can avail of.

The Commonwealth Fund’s recent publication, The Mirror Mirror Report, ranked the UK 4th among the countries with the best healthcare systems in the world. Access to Care, Care Process and Administrative Efficiency were the highest scoring domains across the five used to compile the report.

While healthcare is free, there can be some small charges for prescriptions however the UK have a Prescription Payment Certificate (PPC) with 3 and 12 month options available for those who may need reoccurring or multiple prescriptions. The PPC covers all healthcare prescriptions along with any dental prescriptions with a 3 month PPC costing £30.25 and a 12 month PPC costing £108.10.

Another benefit is joining the NHS as an overseas Nurse automatically qualifies you for pension benefits.

Culturally Diverse

The UK is a melting pot as a result of welcoming many expats from various countries and walks of life. While English is the main language in the UK, it is not uncommon to hear dialects such as Welsh, Celtic and Irish. According to Babbel there are over 4.2 million immigrant languages spoken in the UK, with Polish the most widely spoken, Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali and Gujarati are also high ranking.
